Around Mansfield
Hardwick Hall
Hardwick was built during the 1500s for the notorious, yet remarkable, “Bess of Hardwick” – real name Elizabeth Talbot, Countess of Shrewsbury. The Countess was an influential and wealthy lady, who clearly left her mark.
The hall is a significant example of an Elizabethan country house. Influenced by Italian Renaissance architecture, it has great glass windows with imposing towers, each crowned with the initials E.S. (Elizabeth Shrewsbury). The interiors of the house are a decorative masterpiece adorned in ornamental plasterwork are a showcase of nobel status.
If arriving by train, you will have to take a taxi or walk quite a distance from the station to reach the estate. Driving is the easiest and cheapest option to make the most of your visit to Hardwick. There is a large car park on site.
