Castles and caves
City of Caves
Beneath the city quietly rests Nottingham's complex network of man-made sandstone caves. The hidden maze of over 500 caves and tunnels dates back to the dark ages. These underground dwellings are a significant part of the fabric of the city's history. They have been used as cellars and storeroom as well as being an air raid shelter during World War II, where thousands sought refuge. Beware as it is rumoured that the caves are haunted by ghosts.
Nottingham Castle
The castle's long and varied history dates back to the 11th century. First built by the Normans, then rebuilt under Henry II and eventually occupied by the notorious Sheriff of Nottingham (Robin Hood's enemy), this castle commands grand views over the city. It is currently home to a museum and art gallery. You can also tour the caves beneath the castle and follow the passageways to King David's dungeon.

The Lace Market
One of the oldest districts in the city, the Lace Market placed Nottingham on the map.
The invention of the lace making machine, by Nottinghamshire's William Lee in the 1580s, revolutionised the production of lace, which was traditionally stitched by hand. The invention made the precious and previously expensive textile affordable for everyone, sparking an extensive trade market.
By the 1840s, lace-making changed from a domestic industry into a famed international export, making Nottingham the capital of the world's lace manufacturing industry.
The area's warehouses and narrow streets, reminiscent of Nottingham's glory days. Fashion designer Paul Smith opened his first boutique here in the 1970s and today, many other artisans have carried on the district's creative spirit.
