Possibly the ultimate driving holiday destination. In my gap year (many years ago) I spent 18 months travelling and working in Australia and can thoroughly recommend it to long term travellers to Australia. The vastness of the country presents areally enjoyable driving experience, with hundreds of miles of nothingness interspersed by vibrant cities and spectacular scenery. The three best long haul drives are undoubtedly all the way up the East Coast from Sydney to Cape Tribulation via all points in between such as Brisbane, Byron Bay and the Gold Coast resorts and Cairns, the Red Centre tour from Cairns to Darwin via Alice Springs and Ularu (Ayers Rock) and the South Coast tour all the way from Melbourne to Perth via the Great Ocean Road, Adelaide and the Great Victoria Desert. There are some monster road trips in Australia but it is literally the only way to see the country and the important little stops along the way. - Grant Harris, Edinburgh
