Deene Park <!-- AttractionsAndLeisureActivities isempty -->

Ancestral home of the Brudenell family, whose famous son was at the head of the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854. The house dates back to the 16-17C. Situated around a central courtyard, it was enlarged in the 18 and 19C. The largest part is the great hall of 1571, with splendid Renaissance décor and a miraculously well preserved ceiling. The miniscule oak room is more intimate and houses some charming portraits of women and children.

Imperial War Museum <!-- HistoricStreetsAndDistricts isempty -->

A collection of fighter planes and civilian aircraft (including Concorde), that visitors can climb into is housed in a series of vast hangars that were the English airbase during the Battle of Britain. A B-52 bomber with a wingspan of 56 metres is the highpoint of the collection. It has been moved into a concrete and glass building designed by Norman Foster (1998). In summer, airshows recreate dogfights.

Knebworth House <!-- AttractionsAndLeisureActivities isempty -->

The building dates back to the end of the 15C; the great hall, with its sculpted enclosure, has changed considerably since it was built. Bulwer-Lytton, fantasy author, transformed it into a gothic masterpiece with cupola; this style can be seen in the chimney towers, painted panels and stained glass windows in the large ceremonial room.

Trinity Hall <!-- HistoricStreetsAndDistricts isempty -->

Trinity Hall was founded in 1360. Behind the 18C ashlar of the Principal Court are three rows of buildings dating from 1350 (best viewed from North Court) and, beyond, are the delightful Elizabethan Library and gardens that Henry James called "the prettiest corner of the world".
