Two sites share the collections of the Moravian Gallery. A Neo-Renaissance palace is home to one of the country's finest collections of Decorative Arts, while a little further on, Pra?ák Palace features a representative collection of modern Czech art. Antonín Procházka, a local artist, is prominently represented, but examples of work by nearly all the major painters and sculptors of the 20C from Franti?ek Bílek to Jan Zrzavý are also on show.

Slavkov Castle <!-- CastlesOrStatelyHomes isempty -->

It was in 1509 that the castle of Slavkov, formerly the headquarters of the Teutonic knights at Austerlitz, became the possession of the Kaunitz family. Thanks to the family's wealth and influence, it was modified in a Baroque style in the late 17C. It is today home to a fine collection of 17C and 18C paintings, as well as an exhibition on the battle of Austerlitz. Don't miss the 15ha grounds, adorned with sculptures by Matthias Bernhard Braun.

Fortress of ?pilberk <!-- CastlesOrStatelyHomes isempty -->

Built in the 13C on the hill of the same name, the fortress of ?pilberk withstood repeated assaults before finally falling to Napoleon in 1805. Baptised the "Prison of Nations", it was for many years the most famous jail of the Austrian Empire. After lengthy restoration work, it is now home to the City Museum. In addition to the cells, the section known as the New Brno 1919-39, devoted to the city's hour of glory when it was the focal point of modern design and architecture, is also worthy of mention.

Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul <!-- ReligiousBuildings isempty -->

On the top of the hill of Petrov, the impressive nave and slender towers topped by arrows of the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul can be seen far before you reach the town. Of Gothic origins, it was burnt to the ground by the Swedes during the siege of 1645; it was rebuilt in the Baroque style, and in the 19C in a Gothic style.
