Places of Interest
Laing Art Gallery and Museum <!-- Museums isempty -->

The Gallery's collection is focused on the 19C and has an special interest in the apocalyptic works of the visionary John Martin. You can admire the beautiful exhibits of glass and silver pieces from the Tyne region.

Cathedral <!-- ReligiousBuildings isempty -->

The beauty of this cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, resides in its unity. Most of the building was completed in a short time, from 1095 to 1133; and despite later additions, it is a fine example of harmony and a splendid success for romanesque architecture. With its main body, two western towers and central spire, the cathedral dominates the palace square, university buildings and castle.

Bolton Castle <!-- CastlesOrStatelyHomes isempty -->

Richard Scrope began building his castle in 1379. It is a comfortable period residence and was built around an interior courtyard. For defence, the castle had solid corner towers, small towers and a portcullis. All the part in the south-eastern corner could be closed to make a separate keep. Mary Stuart was held prisoner here 1568-1569. The castle is still perfectly preserved, despite being attacked after the Civil War.

Ripon WorkhouseMuseum of Yorkshire Poor Law <!-- Museums isempty -->

The Ripon Workhouse, a building dating from 1854, demonstrates the appalling living conditions (a display of 19C photographs) and the harsh workhouse regime, often the only resort for those on the fringes of Victorian society - beggars, orphans, old people and lunatics. Tramps were deloused in coffin-like baths and shut up in tiny cells for the night; in return, they had to break stone or chop wood.
