North of the village stands this castle, protected by walls and moats. Its original D-shaped keep was destroyed after the Civil War. The western wing and the tower are built on 12C foundations and became private apartments in the 16C (roof and windows of oak and coated ceilings).

Entering Newcastle from the South you will immediately be struck by the surprising urban panorama. The isolated Gateshead district is linked to the North Bank of Newcastle by bridges which together form an unusualcomposition. The eldest bridge is the strange High Level Bridge by Robert Stephenson (1848), the high level lending itself to rail travel and the lower level to the motorist. The brightly coloured Swing Bridge (1876) which looks like a ship, was designed by lord Armstrong.

The amazing character of this urban landscape is heightened by the substantial presence of the bridge across the Tyne (1928) with its monumental pillars which make the traffic cross the river at a far greater height than the Victorian era commercial buildings. Amongst these commercial buildings you will come across some older buildings, such as the 17C town hall, a distinct half-timbered house, Bessie Surtee's House and All Saints Church - 18C., which has an unusual oval interior.
