Abbey
Probably founded by Benedictines in 1069, its main façade is a mixture of three styles: austerity, simplicity and elegance. See the restored stained glass window of Christ, a 14C stained glass window carrying the coat of arms of the Washingtons, the romanesque baptismal fonts with fine 15C wooden cover, one of the few pieces to have escaped the fire of 1906.

Abbey
An abbey in name only, the medieval priory was converted into a private house in the 16C which was the ancestral seat of Lord Byron (1788-1824). The 19C rooms include the apartments of Byron and a selection of his manuscripts, memorabilia and portraits. Adjoining the main building is the ruined façade of the priory church, its gabled niche holding a seated figure of the Virgin. The lakes, gardens and park make an attractive setting.
