This Romanesque church includes the Portinari Chapel, built in a very pure Renaissance style by Florentine architect Michelozzo: In the architecture, painting (frescoes by Vincenzo Foppa) and the tomb-sculpture by Giovanni di Balduccio are all in perfect harmony with each other.

Quartiere Vecchio (The Old Quarter) <!-- HistoricStreetsAndDistricts isempty -->

The Old Quarter of the lower town is spread around the via Pignolo, bordered by numerous 16 and 18C palaces and a number of churches endowed with a rich selection of artworks, such as S. Bernardino and S. Spirito.

Santa Maria Maggiore (Church of St Mary Major) <!-- ReligiousBuildings isempty -->

Although the basilica dates from 12C, the North and South porches were added by Giovanni da Campione in the 14C. The Baroque interior is rife with gildings and stucco plus has nine superb 16C Florentine tapestries based on cartoons by Alessio Allori recounting the life of the Virgin. At the back of the nave, there is a sumptuous Antwerp tapestry and a Crucifixion... The Baroque confessional is astonishing, as are the panels of inlaid work depicting scenes from the Old Testament.

http://www.chocolatmilano.it/ Gelateria Chocolat. This gelateria has has excellent quality gelato including about 10 flavours of cholocate. Flavours include bitter dark (fondente) chocolate, the obvious milk and white chocolates plus nut, fruit and even chilli variants. Their milk chocolate gelato is the best chocolate ice cream I have ever eaten. I've chomped my way through quite a few so please don't take thiss lightly. They also do coffee, hot chocolate and chocs to take away (though these aren't made on the premises). The cakes look absolutely amazing and although I didn't have space to try them, they will probably be the main reason for a subsequent visit to Milan. Why on earth didn't I make sspace? Open 7.30am - 1am every day. Via Boccaccio 9, 02 481 00597. Near Cadorna Metro. - Simon Owen, Bristol, UK
