Montreal is a fascinating blend of French and Canadian and both influences are clearly evident on and beneath the surface of the city. From the stations of the Montreal Metro with signage and design that echoes Paris to the abundant cafe culture (in summer at least) you could be convinced that you were in mainland Europe. Outwith the city, though, even at Montreal's neighbouring Mount Royal,you are acutely aware that the landscape and scenery are definitiely Canadian. If skiing is your thing, there are some really good slopes outwith Montreal itself - well worth a drive through the Quebec terrain. Check out Mont Carmel and Saint Mathieu both of which are about an hour away from downtown Montreal. - Allan Miller, Kent
