São Lourenço church <!-- ReligiousBuildings isempty -->

This Roman church, added to in the Baroque period is covered with azulejos dating from 1730. The azulejos were designed by Bernardo, an artist known by the name of Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes. Those on the walls and vault depict scenes from St Lawrence's life and his martyrdom... The large panel of azulejos on the church's flat chevet shows St Lawrence under a Baroque scallop.

Bravura dam <!-- Museums isempty -->

From Odiaxere to the dam, the very narrow serpentine road snakes through the irrigated valley where melons, tomatoes, maize and fig trees grow, before climbing the slopes of the Serra de Monchique with extensiveviews over the coastal chain. The vault type dam closes off the valley of Odiaxere. To the west of the dam, a reinforced conduit collects the water that supplies the electricity power station installed downstream before it is used for the irrigation of 1,800 ha of fields.

Cathedral <!-- ReligiousBuildings isempty -->

This cathedral was built on the site of an old mosque. The Gothic nave and the lower sides (13C) are striking in their attractive simplicity. The many tombs are those of the Crusaders who helped to recapture the town in 1242. Opposite the cathedral doorway, there is a Manueline door.

Ponta da Piedade <!-- AttractionsAndLeisureActivities isempty -->

The site of Ponta da Piedade gives this point a special charm. The reddish rock of the cliffs, where sea grottoes nestle at the foot, contrasts spectacularly with the green colour of the clear water. You can visit the grottoes by boat. Behind the lighthouse, the view stretches from Cape St-Vincent to the west to Cape Carvoeiro in the east. Along a tiny road to the left of the lighthouse, there is a belvedere with a vertiginous view over the rocks.
