Places of Interest
St John the Baptist's Church <!-- ReligiousBuildings isempty -->

The church is in the Perpendicular style, and was built in 1380-1400 with fawn and grey coloured stone from Ham Hill. Solid flying buttresses support the 27 m bell tower. The church is remarkable for its windows, keystones sculpted with faces and masks, crypt supported by a central octagonal pillar, 15C lectern and baptismal fonts.

Chesil Beach <!-- UrbanAndNaturalAreas isempty -->

This shingle beach stretches for 13km and closes a lagoon, at the end of which stands the village of Abbotsbury. A swannery, founded here by monks in around 1390, continues to thrive in the mild climate, as do the lush subtropical gardens.

Cadbury Castle <!-- CivilAndHistoricArchitecture isempty -->

Recent digs have provided proof that this place was occupied in prehistoric times and that a fort was built here during the Iron Age, around 600 BC. Some elements seem to indicate that the Romans lived in the castle after the invasion of 43AD and that the Saxons fortified it again at the end of the 5C. The site, which provides a magnificent view, is said to be the castle of King Arthur.

Heritage Centre <!-- Museums isempty -->

In the caves' Heritage Centre, the weapons, utensils made of flint, bone, antler horn and bronze, pottery and the skull of Cheddar Man indicate that the caves were inhabited intermittently from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age (20000 to 500 BC) and in Roman times.
