Treasurer's House <!-- CivilAndHistoricArchitecture isempty -->

Rebuilt in the 17 and 18C, the treasury house of York Cathedral has a magnificent line of rooms containing furniture and paintings from different era. The great room has lost its false ceiling and has an unusual staircase dating back to 1700. The ceiling of the dining room (early 18C) is made of decorated beams and panels. The fascinating collection of glasses shows the skill and ingeniousness of the glassmakers.

The 1853 Gallery contains work by David Hockney on three floors of the old and impressive weaving workshop that also contains a bookshop, furniture store and clothes shop, as well as the Salts Diner.

York City Art Gallery <!-- Museums isempty -->

Vast collection of paintings from 1350 to the present day, with many portraits and studies of nudes by William Etty (1787-1849), a York-born painter buried at St Olave's Cemetery in Marygate.

Fairfax House <!-- CivilAndHistoricArchitecture isempty -->

Built by Viscount Fairfax for his sister Anne in 1755, this Georgian house was used for 50 years as a dancehall and cinema, then was saved from destruction in 1983-84. It now houses a collection of furniture, paintings, clocks and Georgian porcelain. The Cortese ceilings and sculpted wooden moulding have been meticulously restored or replaced.
