Car Hire Italy

Italy can only be explored to its full potential on a car hire holiday. The spectacular Italian Lakes, Lake Como, Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, are in the north of the country, as are the dramatic Alps and Dolomite mountain ranges. The beautiful Italian cities of Rome, Pisa and Florence, and the stunning island of Sardinia are located in the west, whilst romantic Venice and the seaside resort of Rimini are in the east. Italy’s Neapolitan Riviera, the tiny islands of Capri and Ischia, and the larger island of Sicily are all in the south.

Book a rental car with easyCar, the online car hire specialist, and collect it from one of the company’s many rental offices on the Italian mainland and islands. You could stay in an Italian city hotel and use your hire car to explore the surrounding region, or collect your rental car from an airport in Italy and base your holiday on the Mediterranean or Adriatic coast.

Car Hire Italy – Cities and Towns

easyCar has car rental facilities at nearly 40 airports in Italy, including airports in Rome, Milan, Pisa and Bergamo, and has nearly 200 downtown and city car hire offices in the country.

Rome, Italy’s capital city, is famous for its historic sites, museums and art galleries, and designer shops. You can also explore Vatican City and see the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica. However, if you hire a car, you can head off to the Terme dei Papi in Viterbo for a relaxing spa or drive to Tivoli and explore its famous villas.

Milan in northern Italy is ideal for a weekend shopping break, but hire a car and you could be at Lake Garda in 90 minutes, Lake Como within an hour or the Dolomites in four hours.

You can also enjoy two city breaks in one holiday with a rental car. The historic city of Florence, in the Italian region of Tuscany, is less than an hour and a half’s drive from Pisa, known for its Leaning Tower, it’s easy to explore both of these cities on a rental car holiday.

Car Hire Italy – Coast and Islands

One of the most popular coastal areas on mainland Italy is the Venetian Riviera. Whilst car hire is not necessary in the city of Venice, collect a rental car from Venice Airport and discover the long stretch of wide sandy beaches with facilities to keep the whole family happy. You could also explore the beautiful Amalfi Coast on a car hire holiday.

West of mainland Italy, is the exquisite island of Sardina, with its beautiful white sandy beaches and ancient ruins. Fly into Alghero or Olbia in the north, collect your rental car and explore the island, or head to Cagliari in the south for a holiday in Pula.

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean, with flights into and car rental facilities at Catania and Palermo. Mount Etna, the clear sea, the archaeological sites and pretty towns like Taormina draw visitors in.

Car Hire Italy – Driving Tips

There are a few things to consider when on a car hire holiday in Italy. You must drive on the right hand side of the road seatbelts must be worn when travelling. Children under four years of age cannot travel in a rental car without a suitable restraint, and children aged under twelve cannot travel in the front without restraint. If another driver flashes their lights at you or beeps their horn, this is generally a warning. Horns are banned in built up areas.
