Car Hire Lisbon – The City
One of the most famous landmarks in Lisbon is the Santuário do Cristo Rei (Christ
the King Sanctuary), a 110ft tall monument topped with a statue of Christ, which
was modelled on the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. If you hire
a car, you can get to the Santuário do Cristo Rei by driving across the Ponte 25
de Abril, a bridge designed by the same architect who designed the Golden Gate Bridge
in San Francisco. You can take an elevator to the top of the monument for stunning
views across Lisbon.
Other historic attractions in Lisbon include: the UNESCO World Heritage site of
Torre de Belém (Belem Tower), which was constructed in the 16th century; the ruins
of St. George’s Castle, in the medieval Alfama Quarter; Lisbon Cathedral, parts
of which date back to the 12th century; and Fronteira Palace, where you can see
walls featuring beautiful frescoes and decorative tiles, and take a stroll in the
magnificent formal gardens.
Lisbon’s museums and galleries include: the Berardo Museum of Modern and Contemporary
Art, where you’ll find works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, Picasso
and Francis Bacon; the Interactive Science Museum; the National Coach Museum, where
you can see coaches used by members of royalty; and the Roman Theater Museum.
You can also visit Lisbon’s parks and botanical gardens, take the cable car to the
top of the Vasco da Gama Tower, take a tour of Jeronimos Monastery or explore the
Oceanarium.
Car Hire Lisbon – Attractions in the Lisbon Area
For a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, jump in your rental car and
head for the coast. There are several beaches near Cascais, which is about 32km
away from Lisbon and is a picturesque town with many attractions. If you enjoy surfing
or windsurfing, try Guincho Beach, which is about a 10 minute drive from Cascais.
Other beaches in the area include Tamariz Beach, further along the coast and close
to the fashionable resort of Estoril. It’s worth parking your rental car and exploring
Estoril, which is home to the Casino de Estoril, which was used as a location in
the James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.
Other places to visit in your Lisbon rental car include the Boca do Inferno (Hell’s
Mouth) look-out point just outside of Cascais, and the UNESCO World Heritage site
of Sintra, about 31km away from Lisbon. Sintra is home to museums, palaces and the
remains of a Moorish castle, and is a great place to spend a day or two as part
of a rental car holiday.
