Cities and Towns in Austria
easyCar has car rental facilities at a number of airports in Austria, including
Graz Airport, Innsbruck Airport, Salzburg Airport and Vienna Airport, and also has
car hire offices in cities and towns such as Salzberg, Vienna, Linz and Zell am
See.
Vienna, or Wien, is the capital of Austria, and its centre is a designated UNESCO
World Heritage Site. Park your rental car and stroll down the Baroque and Romanesque
boulevards, see a play at the Volkstheater or enjoy the opera at the Theater an
der Wien. Vienna has many museums, including the Schatzkammer, or Imperial Treasury,
in the Hofburg Imperial Palace, and you can also see the famous Lipizzaner horses
perform at the Spanish Riding School. There’s plenty to do in the city, but with
a rental car, you can head to a ski resort for a few days or visit other local attractions.
Salzburg, birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, lies to the north of the Alps and
was the setting for The Sound of Music. Attractions in Salzburg include the Hohensalzburg
Castle, the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, and Mozart’s Birthplace. Use a rental car
to get to nearby attractions, such as Eisriesenwelt Werfen, the largest ice cavern
in the world, or the lakes of Salzkammergut.
Mountains and Rivers
Austria has many excellent ski resorts where you can take part in a range of winter
sports, including ice skating, snowboarding and ski jumping as well as skiing. Many
also offer activities during the summer, so whether you are taking a car rental
holiday in summer or winter, hire a car and head for the mountains. Try resorts
such as St. Johann, Kitzbühel, Kirchberg and St. Anton am Alberg, the lakeside town
of Zell am See or the mountain village of Alpbach. In Saalbach-Hinterglemm, you
can enjoy relaxing spa treatments as well as skiing, making it the perfect place
to go as part of a winter car rental holiday.
You could also follow the Danube in your rental car. Start in Vienna and drive through
the Wachau Valley, travelling through quaint picturesque villages where you’ll discover
ancient castles and vineyards.
Austria Driving Tips
When driving a rental car in Austria, drive on the right-hand side of the road.
Seat belts must be worn and the laws regarding child seats are the same as they
are in the UK. Keep within the speed limits and, as alcohol limits are lower than
in the UK, it’s best not to drink at all before driving your rental car. Keep your
driving licence, car rental documents and passport with you when travelling in your
hire car.
You may need snow chains for your hire car when travelling in Austria during winter.
If so, book them in advance. If you need to transport skis or a snowboard, book
a ski roof rack when booking the rental car.
