Driving advice for Bulgaria

Tolls
You must display a vignette in your window when driving on motorways. These are available at border crossings, some petrol stations and post offices. Rental cars in Bulgaria should already have a vignette – ask at the rental desk to make sure.

Road Conditions
Away from motorways, road conditions in Bulgaria can be poor, so factor this into your driving time and plan accordingly. Be particularly aware that road signs are not consistently good – a map or GPS is essential.

Mandatory Items
All cars must be equipped with a first-aid kit, reflective vest and warning triangle. You must always drive with your headlights on low beam.

Families
Children under 12 are not permitted to sit in the front passenger seat.

The Capital

Sofia is the majestic and impressive capital of Bulgaria. Off the beaten track compared to the well-trodden Black Sea coast, Sofia is a jewel that must be seen. Here you will find a skyline of church domes including the gold crown of the Aleksander Nevski Cathedral as well as Ottoman mosques and an eclectic mix of monuments.

A small and compact city with a distinctly laid-back feel, visitors can easily see the central sights by foot, including impressive museums and galleries.

However, step away from the central hub and buzz of this cosmopolitan capital and you soon stumble upon enormous parks and well-tended gardens where you can amble and relax away some time. You’re also only a stone’s throw from the domineering Mount Vitosha.
