Mezze, mosaics and mountains. How could the birthplace of the Goddess of Love not be a romantic destination?

Paphos is a lovers retreat without even trying. Swirling, teal waters create foamy tides around Aphrodite’s Rock, and perfect sunsets accompany evening dinners. However, there is also an abundance of history and nature to discover in and around the city.

Cyprus is filled with exciting places to drive to. Further round the coast are Egyptian-looking tombs; although the luxury of these ancient structures feels more appropriate for the living. The Troodos Mountains dominate the landscape beyond the city borders, and petite mountain villages surrounded by pine forests are hidden in the hills.

Another local luxury, layers of filo pastry hide a rich spinach and feta filling in this divine dish.

Koupepia
Stuffed vine leaves. Traditional, extremely tasty and filled with meat and veg.

Loukoumades
Deep fried dough balls soaked in honey and sometimes dusted with cinnamon.

Carob syrup

Native, Mediterranean carob fruit is harvested by locals, and the syrup made from it can be poured over yoghurt.

Discover Cyprus

Nature at its finest

Driving around the coast, there are sights to see all over this glorious island. The conservation project on Lara Beach nurtures turtle hatchlings and protects the eggs of mothers. With timing on your side, you can witness newborns journeying to the sea, leaving their tiny footprints in the sand.

Also north of Paphos is the Avakas Gorge, a wonderful piece of natural scenery with a walking trail beyond its mysterious walls. Sunlight squeezes through cracks at the top, but the gorge itself provides welcome shade from the summer sun. Scramble over rocks, explore the area and head to Viklari for lunch afterwards.

Hit the road and and go further afield. You can hit the other side of the island in just a few hours, with some lovely scenery en route. In Larnaca, pink flamingos feast on mounds of shrimp in a salty lake. Cape Greco Peninsula is a headland offering stunning views out to sea across. Look out for Love Bridge, a natural rocky arch in the sea popular with honeymooners.
