Car Hire Italy - Cities and Towns

Italy’s cities offer everything from historic landmarks to designer boutiques, and are wonderful places to visit. However, if you hire a car, you can travel between cities or visit some of the attractions outside of them in order to get a real flavour of the country.
If you’re staying in Milan, for example, you can use a rental car to drive to the Italian Lakes and explore the Lake Como or Lake Garda areas. If you are using Rome as a base, using a rental car will enable you to drive to Tivoli to explore the Villa D’Este and Villa Adriana (Hadrian’s Villa), whilst if you are staying in Naples, you can drive your hire car to the ruined cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and visit Mount Vesuvius, the volcano responsible for their destruction.

If you want to escape from the city, you can use your rental car to take a scenic driving tour of Italy’s Amalfi Coast, which stretches from Positano to Salerno on the Sorrento Peninsula. Highlights of the Amalfi Coast include the towns of Amalfi, Ravello and Positano, which is known as the “town of terraces” because the town is set into the cliffs. The Amalfi Coast is famous for its quaint cliff-top towns and villages, and its beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Italy is also know for its fantastic ski resorts, so if you enjoy winter sports, fly into one of Italy's northern airports pick up your hire car and head for the Alps in Northern Italy or the Dolomites in North-West Italy. You can also pick up a rental car in Turin and use it to drive to one of the many ski resorts near the city.
Car Hite Italy - Driving Tips
There are a few things to bear in mind when on a car hire holiday in Italy. Italians drive on the right-hand side of the road and it is a legal requirement to wear seatbelts when travelling in a car. You must carry your driving licence, V5 vehicle registration document and certificate of motor insurance in your hire car. You must also have visibility vests in your rental car.
Different types of Italian road have different speed limits, as follows: Expressways (130kmph/80mph); Dual Carriageways (110kmph/68mph); Urban stretches (90kmph/55mph); Outside of built-up areas (110kmph/68mph); and within built-up areas (50kmph/30mph).
