Luton travel tips

Picking up the car
There is one terminal at Luton Airport, so you don’t have to worry about which terminal you land and depart from. The car hire centre is easily accessed by a short shuttle bus which can be boarded from Bay C.

Not flying in?
If you are picking up a car from the airport, but not flying into Luton, a good option is to get an easyBus from London Victoria.

Hate queuing?
If you want to save time when going through security, then you can upgrade to a priority pass for just £3 online or £5 at the airport. This will give you a shortcut through to the security hall.

Size of car
If you have luggage with you, make sure you take this into account when you book a car. Travelling long distances is best when you are comfortable, especially after a tiring flight.

Around the airport

Motorways
Luton Airport is right next to the M1, a brilliant motorway linking the capital with Leeds, a city in the North of England. It is also close to the M25 which encircles London.

Be traffic conscious
If you are returning your rental car early in the morning, the roads getting into Luton can be really busy. Many flights depart early, so allow extra time to account for the possibility that you may be sitting in standstill traffic for a while. Security queues will be long at this time, too.

Small towns
There are lots of little suburbs to visit within close proximity of Luton Airport. Some notable ones are St Albans, Letchworth Garden City and High Wycombe.

Entertainment
The Harry Potter Warner Bros Studio Tour is close to Luton airport. Best to book this in advance as it’s a popular attraction.

Heading into London

Primrose Hill – good for views

A spectacular vantage point overlooking the city skyline, come here for a countryside atmosphere, spring picnics and an epic panorama of London’s standout landmarks. This is a great place to come away from it all if the hustle and bustle of urban life gets a little intense.

From Primrose Hill, it’s an easy walk to Regent’s Park, another beautiful green space within the city. Here you’ll find the world’s oldest zoo as well as a range of open air theatre productions during the summer months.

A day out

Hampton Court Palace

If England’s rich and fascinating history is what brings you to its shores, a day trip to Hampton Court Palace is an absolute must. Located in West London’s suburbs, this 16th-century royal palace was built for Henry VIII’s chief advisor, Thomas Wolsey, and was later reclaimed by the king himself. With ice-skating in the winter and the world-renowned Hampton Court Flower Show in the summer, it’s perfect for all seasons. As well as housing and displaying artworks from the Royal Collection, it also features a maze and hosts various events throughout the year.

Take to the capital

Canary Wharf – good for architechture

A huge financial district located on the Isle of Dogs, this area is comprised of 16 million square feet of office space and plenty of high end food, drinks and shopping. This dense collection of glittering high rises could be confused with New York or Tokyo, and makes for an interesting contrast to other parts of the city.

The Museum of London Docklands is also located here, so the history of the docks is at your fingertips too. The rest of central London is also brimming with inventive structures: look out for the ones with pet names (the Walkie Talkie, the Cheese Grater and the Gherkin).
