One of the two Pillars of Hercules that marked the edge of the ancient world, Gibraltar defiantly juts out into the open sea. The southernmost tip, Europa Point is capped off with the mighty 170-year-old Trinity Lighthouse. If you would like to learn more about the history of this unique territory, the Gibraltar Museum offers a fascinating series of exhibits featuring ancient relics and more recent finds. The famous Rock of Gibraltar is home to a wonderful nature reserve with amazing panoramic views. Take a cable car to the top and watch the popular Barbary macaques, the last wild colony of monkeys in Europe, fool around on the cliff top. Just make sure you watch your bag – they’re an inquisitive bunch with very light fingers!
Rent a car in Gibraltar and explore the area at your own pace. Take a drive down to Trafalgar Cemetery where the graves of many of the fallen from 1805’s Battle of Trafalgar are located. With more time to spare, you could even take a trip to Spain’s Costa del Sol, where you can enjoy the hedonistic pleasures of beaches and bars.
