Hire a car in Cagliari

An old world city, built upon epic surroundings, Cagliari is a walk through the ages.

The sun-kissed capital of Sardinia is an excellent choice for those who desire a well-priced city break with Italian vibes and fascinating local traditions. Things move at a relaxed pace in Cagliari, and it’s not overwhelmed with holidaying visitors. The combination of these two characteristics mean that you’ll feel part of local life within no time.

Exploring further north of the city is a delight, and although Sardinia is the second largest island in the med, cities such as Olbia are only a few hours away by car.

Useful information about Cagliari

Don't miss…

Il Castello
A citadel built on the hillside that used to house Cagliari’s aristocracy, Il Castello is one of the island’s most iconic images and is a must-see for its medieval architecture. Here you’ll find a university, museums, a cathedral and all manner of things to explore and do.

Museo Archeologico Nazionale
With a history as rich as Cagliari’s, there’s so much to see in this archeological museum, including artifacts going back to its Neolithic origins. If you want to learn about Sardinian culture through the centuries, it’ll be here.

Cattedrale di Santa Maria
While there is so much history in Cagliari, this stunning cathedral mostly only dates back to the 1930s, though the bell tower is a remnant from the original Gothic cathedral. Despite this more modern facade, it is still a sight to behold.

Poetto Beach
It can’t all be history and architecture on a road trip of course, and it would be a crime to ignore the pleasures of the beach and the blue waters that lap on the shore. There’s plenty to do, including water sports, if you don’t want to just relax.

Cagliari driving tips

Cagliari may be a major city in Sardinia, but it doesn’t suffer from the kind of traffic problems associated with the Italian mainland – island life operates at a different pace altogether. Here are our driving tips:

Local roads
There are few main roads in Sardinia, so exploring the island as a whole tends to mean a lot of exploring via country lanes, which aren’t without their charms and complications, including sheep.

Driving from Cagliari
The main road on the island, which of course runs through Cagliari, is the SS131 (the Carlo Felice), which goes to Porto Torres via Oristano, Macomer and Sassari.

Finding the island’s hidden gems
Some of the most appealing parts of the island are only accessible by even smaller roads that are basically dirt tracks.

Speed limits
There are no autostradas on the island, so the speed limit on the main highways is 110km/h, with 90km/h on the secondary highways and 50km/h in cities like Cagliari.

Beyond Cagliari

A drive away

Poetto Beach is the best one to go to in the city, but if you want to explore a bit wider and see the rest of the famously beautiful beaches of Sardinia, then it really is time for a road trip. Begin first with La Cinta in San Teodoro, which is about two and a half hours’ drive from Cagliari.

Carrying on up towards the north of the island, Stintino has an incredible beach of white sands and blue waters, called La Pelosa. If that one is busy, Spiaggia delle Saline and Cala Lupo are equally impressive beaches in the same area.
