Adding an additional driver?

Driving in an unfamiliar country and covering long distances can be tiring, which is why rental companies allow you to add on additional drivers. Sharing the driving is the easiest way to cover as much of Italy possible, but how much more will it add on to your rental price? The chart below highlights the price our most popular car hire companies in Rome charge for adding an additional driver.

Our most popular
suppliers

rates per day
Sicily By Car €6,18 + VAT
Locauto €7,08

Maggiore €8,05
Europcar €9,76

Who can I add as an additional driver?
The same rules apply for additional drivers as drivers, in terms of age restrictions and how long you must have held your license for. This may change slightly depending on the car hire company, so be sure to check the terms and conditions.

Tip: Look out for deals through easyCar – sometimes suppliers will offer an additional driver for free.

Getting the best rental value

There are a number of different factors to take into account when trying to find the best value car hire for your Italian adventure. But given Rome’s fame as a must-see city, prices heavily rely on the highs and lows of tourist numbers.

ZTL zones explained

Rome and Italy’s other major cities can be a congested nightmare, which is why you’ll find Limited Traffic Zones, Zona Taffico Limitato in Italian, in place around their historic centres. If you want to avoid a hefty fine, its best that you learn the rules of the ZTL zones. But remember, the rules may differ city to city. Here’s the general run down:

  • Vehicles are not allowed in these areas unless they have a permit.
  • Be wary of where your GPS is taking you. As nifty as navigation devices are, they don’t know about the zones, so may end up leading you to one. Plot out your route before and make note of where the ZTL is.
  • ZTL entrances are regulated by ticket-cameras, which process fines instantly. Driving in by accident can be a costly mistake.
  • Times at which the zone is active can vary day to day. There are usually signs or lights at the ZTL entry points that will let you know.

Many of the road signs you spot around Rome and throughout Italy will be familiar, but there are a some more uncommon signs that you may not recognise. Before heading out on your road trip, its helpful to take note of some of the more unusual signs, such as these:
