Geneva is situated in the west of Switzerland, close to the border with France, and is the country’s third largest city. It’s known as a city of culture and has more than 40 museums, including the International Red Cross Museum, the International Automobile Museum, and the Voltaire Institute and Museum.
The most famous landmark in Geneva is the Jet d’Eau, a huge water fountain situated on the Quai du Général-Guisan. The water is propelled to a height of 140m and the column of the fountain is illuminated at night. Geneva is also known for being the home of the Palais des Nations (the headquarters of the United Nations) and for its tradition of clock-making - don’t miss the Flower Clock in the English Garden, or the Malbuisson Clock with its mechanical figures.
As you’d expect, Geneva’s shops include some excellent jewellery stores and you can also treat yourself with some Swiss chocolate from one of the city’s chocolatiers. The city has some excellent restaurants, including some which have gained Michelin stars, and you’ll find plenty to do at night, with many clubs, bars and cinemas to choose from.

Although Geneva is packed with attractions, using a rental car will enable you to see far more of what Switzerland has to offer. You could drive to the city of Lausanne, for example, to visit The Olympic Museum and explore the medieval Old Town area, or use your rental car to get to the Chambésy Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, where you can see more than 16,000 different plants.
You could also use your hire car to visit Switzerland’s “city of lights”, Lucerne, where you can take a steam-boat trip on Lake Lucerne and see historic buildings such as the 17th century Cathedral and the 14th century Water Tower.
Geneva’s proximity to the French border means that you can use a hire car to visit two countries in one holiday. Spend a few days at one of the ski resorts in France’s Grand Massif Ski area, or use your rental car to get to the city of Lyon, which is only about one hour and forty minutes’ drive from Geneva.
