Adventure awaits the intrepid traveller in Macedonia – get to know off-the-beaten track Europe at its best.

Macedonia acts as the bridge between the Balkans and the Mediterranean. There is no escaping the influence of the Romans, Ottomans and Greeks – the result is eclectic to say the least. In Macedonia you should take life at your own pace. Travel infrastructure isn’t great, so having use of your own vehicle is ideal. Be sure to visit the glistening waters of Lake Ohrid, but don’t stop there. Take a drive to the spectacular national parks of Mavrovo, Pelister and Galičica.

Driving advice for Macedonia

Tolls
There are many tolls on the motorways. Carry some spare change, as many of these only accept cash.

Speed Camera Detection
It is illegal to use, or carry in the vehicle, technology to detect speed cameras or radars. This includes using a GPS with this function. You must deactivate it whilst in the country.

Passengers
It is illegal for anyone under the influence of alcohol to sit in the front seat of a vehicle, even as a passenger.

Horns
Horns must not be used in urban areas except in an emergency. In non-urban areas it is common to use the horn to indicate that you are about to overtake another vehicle.

The Capital

In many ways, Skopje is a peculiar city, largely as a result of prolific attempts to make it stand out. The city has built so many monuments and noteworthy buildings in recent decades that it has created an atmosphere distinctly different from the other Balkan cities.

Despite Skopje's rich heritage, the city is still in its infancy and can sometimes feel like a confusing work in progress. Many of the new riverfront buildings are done up in a neoclassical style of architecture.

But you'll find a great deal of true historical buildings here as well. The Kale Fortress dominates the skyline with roots dating to the 10th century. The Old Bazaar has stood here since the 12th century. The Stone Bridge will lead you to both of these sights in majestic style.

Also be prepared to come across a plethora of statues in Skopje – they are literally everywhere!
