Car Hire Glasgow – The City
With its historic sites, bars, restaurants, shops and music venues, Glasgow is a
great place to visit as part of a hire car holiday.
Glasgow was the European City of Culture in 1990 and, in 2008, it was named as a
UNESCO City of Music. It has many excellent music and performing arts venues, including
the O2 Academy, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, the Theatre Royal, King Tut’s Wah
Wah Hut and the Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom.
During the day, you can visit one of Glasgow’s many museums and art galleries, such
as the Burrell Collection, the Gallery of Modern Art, the Museum of Transport and
the Kelingrove Art Gallery and Museum. You can also follow the Mackintosh Trail
to see some of the buildings associated with the architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh,
who was born in Glasgow in 1868.
Other popular Glasgow tourist attractions include the Glasgow Science Centre, and
the People’s Palace and Winter Gardens. The People’s Palace houses a social history
museum and the Winter Gardens feature the largest terracotta fountain in the world.
Glasgow is also the perfect place to go if you enjoy shopping. Park your rental
car and head for Pinces Square for designer clothing, Argyll Arcade for jewellery
or the West End for antiques, second-hand books and vintage clothes. Other places
to shop include the Buchanan Galleries Shopping Centre, the St. Enoch Shopping Centre
and the Barras Market.
Car Hire Glasgow – Attractions in the Glasgow Area
For a break from the city, you can use your rental car to get to Loch Lomond, which
is less than an hour’s drive from Glasgow. Loch Lomond is the largest body of freshwater
on the British mainland and is situated in the Trossachs National Park. Activities
available in the park include walking, cycling, horse riding, sailing, waterskiing,
windsurfing and canoeing. You can also park your rental car and take the ferry to
Inchcailloch, a small wooded island in the loch, and explore its nature trail.
You could also turn your Glasgow break into a two-destination holiday by using a
rental car. Edinburgh is only just over an hour’s drive from Glasgow and has many
attractions, including Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile.
It will also only take about two and a half hours to get to Fort William, the largest
town in the West Highlands, in a rental car. You can then use your hire car to visit
Glencoe, Ben Nevis or the fishing town of Mallaig.
