San Sebastian driving tips

San Sebastian doesn’t pose many complications for drivers as the city is relatively small and boasts a well-connected web of motorways. Here are our top driving tips:

Heading north?
If your journey to San Sebastian is from Northern Spain, you will need to choose the AP-8 motorway; if you are travelling from France or Southern Spain you will take the A-1.

Border crossing
The main roads surrounding San Sebastian are situated near the French border. Because of its position, these roads provide a main route of access into France from Spain and Portugal and are used by lorries coming from Europe – as a result they can become very busy.

Parking
As with all cities in Northern Spain, underground car parks and on-street parking that require pay and display are the main options. There are two park and ride facilities Antiguo and in Amara providing easy access to the city centre.

Local festivals

The Jazz Festival
Taking place in the last week in July, The Jazz Festival sees millions of people flock to San Sebastian to experience top jazz performances take place around the city. Some are ticketed, but there are also many free concerts to enjoy.

Semana Grande
Another significant date for the diary is the Semana Grande which translates to Big Week. This is one of the most popular festivals and it takes place in the third week of August each year. Street parades and firework displays are just a couple of reasons to show up.

Caldereros
This festival occurs on the first Saturday in February and it is known to be noisy. Locals line the streets banging pots and pans – a tradition that dates back to 1884. A hub of activity, the Caldereros festival is a street carnival not to be missed.

Horror and Fantasy Film Festival
If you ever fancied seeing San Sebastian turned into a horror movie set, visit in late October for the Horror and Fantasy Film Festival. As well as movie screenings, you can visit horror themed exhibitions and concerts. A must-see for horror enthusiasts.

Unforgettable Bilbao

Less than an hour’s drive away from San Sebastian via the AP8, Bilbao is home to the renowned Guggenheim Museum and boasts impressive architecture that reflects the city’s passion for combining the old and new.

If you head to Bilbao, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Santiago Cathedral (the city’s oldest building) located within its core.

The city is brimming with fun, affordable things to do, but the outskirts of Bilbao are largely untouched by tourists making them an even more enticing part of the world to explore by car.
