Boston – The City

Boston is an attractive city and is divided into 21 neighbourhoods, which include South Boston, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, Dorchester and Cambridge. It’s steeped in history and this is reflected in its architecture. Historic buildings include the Old State House, Old City Hall and Trinity Church.

There are a number of walking trails that you can follow in Boston, the best-known of which is the Freedom Trail. Learn about the history of Boston and the American Revolution on this 2.5km tour, which will take you past 16 of the city’s key sites, including the site of the Boston Massacre, Faneuil Hall and Bunker Hill Monument. You can also follow the Black Heritage Trail or one of the seven walks that make up the Boston Women’s Heritage Trail.

Fans of Cheers can visit the pub which was the inspiration for the TV show. Originally known as the Bull and Finch, it has been renamed Cheers on Beacon Hill. Other popular attractions in Boston include the John Hancock Tower and the New England Aquarium, and the famous Harvard University campus is also located in the city.

People travel for miles to shop in Boston, as it has everything from high-end malls to second-hand book shops. It also has many restaurants and hotels, so it’s a great place to use as a base for a rental car holiday.

Attractions in the Boston Area

There are many places that you can visit if you hire a car during your stay in Boston. Cape Cod is one of the USA’s most popular tourist destinations and it will only take about two and a half hours to get there from Boston in your rental car. There are more than 60 public beaches along 560 miles of coast in Cape Cod and many sporting activities are available, including boating, fishing, golf (there are 27 public courses) and cycling.

You can also use your rental car to get to Salem, which is about 30 minutes’ drive from Boston. This town is best-known for the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, although the site of the trials was actually in nearby Danvers. Park your hire car and learn more about the trials in the Salem Witch Museum, explore the New England Pirate Museum and take a tour of the House of the Seven Gables, which was made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel.
