Las Vegas – The City
Las Vegas can seem a little unreal as a protrusion of buildings appear out in the
desert, many of which are copies of other areas of the world, such as the Venice
canals, Egypt’s Sphinx, Paris’ Eiffel Tower and the New York skyline.
The Strip is renowned for its extensive choice of accommodation, shops, casinos,
theme parks and active experiences, as well as being a popular wedding location.
Many of the hotels around Las Vegas Boulevard, better known as Las Vegas Strip,
are extensive resort hotels with casinos, theme parks, multiple swimming pools,
shopping emporiums, endless eateries and hundreds of rooms.
For the thrill seekers amongst you, hold on for the 225 foot drop of the Desperado
Roller Coaster, the world’s tallest and fastest roller coaster, or keep your feet
firmly on the ground and drive your hire car to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The
race track is host to a round of the NASCAR Sprint Cup series in late February,
the biggest motorsport series in the USA, where cars joust at high speeds around
a 1.5 mile, banked oval track.
For spectacular views of Las Vegas, view the city from the 1,149 foot Stratosphere
Tower at night or visit the new multimillion dollar Star Trek: The Experience. Need
to keep out of the sun? The Adventuredome Theme Park located at Circus Circus on
the strip, is an indoor five acre theme park. The park offers everything from rock
climbing, 18 hole miniature golf, to the Canyon Blaster Roller Coaster. Alternatively,
for a spectacular animal experience, visit the world famous magicians Siegfried
& Roy’s Secret Garden.
Do look at booking Las Vegas shows before you arrive, where many world famous big
names showcase their acts, in order to avoid disappointment.
Attractions in the Las Vegas Area
As we have already seen, there are many experiences to enjoy in Las Vegas, but there
are many more if you rent a hire car and leave the city. Within a few hours’ drive
you can be in one of the 13 National Parks near Las Vegas, namely the dramatic Death
Valley National Park which is 110 miles west of Las Vegas. Bonnie Springs Old Nevada
is a 30 minutes drive by rental car for a true desert experience, and the famous
Hoover Dam is only 34 miles from the city.
Visiting Arizona’s spectacular Grand Canyon National Park is a popular expedition
from Las Vegas, although it is a very long day; however you could drive your hire
car and stay in Flagstaff (about five hours), which is 90 miles from the South Rim.
The Lake Mead National Recreation Area is just 25 miles from Las Vegas and boasts
over 500 miles of shoreline. The area offers excellent conditions for swimming,
water skiing, sailing and fishing. An hour’s drive by hire car takes you to Mount
Charleston, part of the Spring Mountain Range where in the winter you can ski and
in the summer enjoying hiking trips and horseback rides.
