Local knowledge

Must-sees in the city

Newcastle is bursting with museums, galleries, restaurants, bars and live music spots. Here are some of our favourite attractions.

Newcastle Castle
The site of the original fortress that gave the city its name, the castle keep today offers visitors a glimpse of medieval life with features such as the Black Gate. It's worth climbing all the stairs to the top as you'll be rewarded with fantastic views!

St James' Park
Just outside the city centre, St James' Park is home to football in Newcastle. You can book a tour round the stadium and learn more about the club and its history from knowledgeable tour guides.

The Biscuit Factory
This former Victorian warehouse is the largest independent commercial art gallery in the UK. As you stroll through the exhibits you'll see examples of fine art, sculpture, jewellery, homewares – and much more.

The Discovery Museum
Combining science and local history, this museum offers plenty of engaging exhibits and collections. Check out the famous Turbinia ship, which was the first to be powered by a steam turbine.

A city of character

Delightful Durham

A 30-minute drive south from Newcastle and you’ll arrive into the historic city of Durham. Most famous for its cathedral, castle and university, the entire city centre is a conservation area. As you weave your way through the cobbled streets that give Durham so much of its character, you’ll soon come across two of its most celebrated landmarks.

Durham Castle has its origins in the 11th century and is one of the best examples of Norman motte and bailey castles. Durham Cathedral is another 11th-century construction. Its stunning architecture is a marvel to behold as you walk around this place of worship.

When you’ve finished soaking up the history of these sites, head to Durham Market Hall for some retail therapy. There are over 50 stalls to browse inside the fine Victorian building that is home to this popular market.

Stop and have a coffee at one of the many independent cafes in the city before getting back in the car and making the 10-minute journey to Durham University. Not just a collection of beautiful buildings, there’s also a botanic garden to enjoy a stroll around when the weather is good.
