Hire a car in Sheffield

George Orwell once branded Sheffield as “the ugliest town in the Old World”.

Thankfully, the city has undergone plenty of reconstruction since Orwell’s time. “Sheffield Steel” was a household name, which made the city rich and established it on the engineering forefront. Today, its student population and urban flare have generated an uncompromising creative outlook.

Still in the process of major redevelopment, one can expect even more changes within the city in the coming years.

A drive away

The Peak District

In 1951, the Peak District was designated Britain's first national park and is effectively Sheffield’s back garden. Rent a car and you’ll be just a 10-minute drive from it.

Although the name of the park is misleading, as it lacks any true peaks, it does contain rolling hills, valleys, and wild moorlands that stretch on past the horizon.

Hidden within the landscape are ancient stone villages and rocky outcrops. Stroll around the heritage sites and stately homes, such as Chatsworth House, while breathing in the fresh air.

If you’re interested in a more challenging hike, follow the Pennine Way trail. A favourite with walkers, this long trek begins in the Peak District at Edale and continues the the border of Scotland.

You can also take a tour around the complex Castleton show caves. Here you will find four caverns, including Blue John Mine, home to Britain's rarest mineral - Blue John Stone.

Exploring the town

Antiques Quarter

This historic area, south of the city centre, is part of the beating heart of Sheffield. Eight antiques centres and over 60 independent shops define the quarter’s main trail.

Filled with unique traders, retro clothing, and music shops, it is the epitome of shopping local and independent. It doesn’t get much better than this for bargain hunting.

You’ll also find the city’s oldest cinema, Abbeydale Picture House, at the epicentre of the district. The venue hosts range of cultural events, adding to the creative buzz.

Keep an eye out for the Pedlar’s Corner Car Boot and Flea Market, which takes place the first Sunday of each month. With over 70 stalls, the Antiques Quarter seems to expand even further on these weekends.
