Larnaca – The City
Larnaca is the third largest city in Cyprus and is the second most important commercial port in the country. The city dates back 4000 years and was known as Kition (as was the whole of the island). You can visit parts of ancient Kition to the north west of the city, where 13th century temples and other buildings still stand, including the Phoenician Temple of Astarte.
As a port, Larnaca has a beautiful sea-front with clean, sandy beaches and a yachting marina. The main tourist attraction in Larnaca is the Phinikoudes, a strip of bars, clubs, cafes and restaurants on the sea front. Phinikoudes means ‘small palm trees’ and were planted there in 1922. During the holiday season, there are many facilities laid on for the tourist, including sun beds, water sports, umbrellas and lifeguards.
If museums are your thing, why not visit the Pierides Foundation Archaeological Museum, which contains archaeological finds and art from all over Cyprus You will find collections from pre-historic time’s right through to the Middle Ages on display. The museum is the oldest in Cyprus and is run by the Pierides family.
Larnaca’s palm tree lined marina has 200 berths and is a popular area of the city to visit. You will find many cafes and taverna’s alongside the harbour, ideal for taking a break from all the sightseeing!
Attractions in the Larnaca Area
One of the advantages of using a hire car is that you can visit other locations outside of the city that you are staying in. Larnaca has several attractions nearby that may take your fancy, including the Cyprus party capital of Ayia Napa.
Ayia Napa is a tourism hot spot and attracts many sun seekers and party goers every year. If you are so inclined, you can sample the many bars and nightclubs that the resort offers, or maybe visit other more sedate attractions such as the Ayia Napa Monastry, the Water World Park or the Marine Life museum.
Away from the maddening crowd, you could visit the Chapelle Royale, just off the Nicosia to Limassol highway. The church is a French style Lusginan shrine and dates from the early 15th century. People visiting often combine this with a visit to the nearby picturesque village of Aiga Anna.
