Sheffield has a lot to offer if you want a fun weekend away. Boasting two universities, the city has a wealth of culture and plenty of things to see and do. It's surrounded by various other big cities that are just an easy drive away, meaning you can get a true taste of the north and have a fun-packed trip.
Things to do
You will find something to suit everyone of all ages in Sheffield from the bars to the arcades. If you want to take in some culture, visit one of the museums or art galleries dotted around the city. Lest you forget that Sheffield is one of the most famous cities for music in the UK with several big-name artists originating from there. The Arctic Monkeys, Pulp and Def Leppard are just a few names worth mentioning, a sure-fire sign that Sheffield is the place to be if you want music.
There are, naturally, several music venues to be found in Sheffield so make sure you go and see at least one gig during your stay. Similarly, there are lots of theatres that show everything from plays to operas. Sheffield is rumoured to be the greenest city in Europe so you'll find yourself surrounded by woods and parks. The Botanical Gardens and the Peace Gardens are both worth wandering around on a nice, sunny day. Pack a picnic and make a day of it.
If you want to head a bit further out of the city centre, you won't be short of things to do. Head to Meadowhall, one of the biggest shopping centres in the UK. Here you'll find shops for absolutely everyone so take a day and shop till you drop. If you fancy getting active, drive out to Rother Valley Country Park and partake in some watersports, cycling, running and even archery. If you plan on having an adventure with the kids, make sure you visit Valley Centertainment. Situated in Don Valley, this leisure complex contains a bowling alley, cinema, several restaurants and a Laser Quest. You'll be able to keep the children entertained all day and finish the day off with dinner in one of the many eateries.
The Peak District and Derbyshire are both within easy driving distance, giving you some great views of the countryside. You can head a bit further out and visit Alton Towers for a day of thrills and giggles. Around 90 minutes away from Sheffield, this huge theme park has roller coasters and log flumes, as well as cafes and shops that people of all ages can enjoy. There's even a driving school that lets children control electric cars around a track. The Heights of Abraham in the Peak District is a cable car journey that will give you spectacular views of the Derwent Valley and the Peak District surrounding area. There are also tours of the caverns that date back millions of years and you can find out the fascinating history behind the old mines.
