Things to do:
Washington Park is a fascinating blend of beautifully preserved architecture, lush flower gardens, lakes, a recreation centre, tennis courts and lawns and is popular with joggers, cyclists, boaters and tourists alike. Denver Botanic Gardens is another shining example of Denver’s green spaces, with several areas housing plants endemic to Colorado. A fifteen minute’s drive away, in the massive City Park, Denver Zoo houses over 600 species from all over the world in a variety of naturalistic habitats and runs many kid-friendly presentations.
Denver’s cultural offerings are not to be disregarded either. Launched in 1922, Denver Art Museum is one of the largest art museums in America, and is renowned for its impressive and comprehensive compilation of Native American art as well as almost 70,000 other works. The museum is free for children as a result of their learning and engagement scheme. Colorado is not just a haven for country crooners; the Colorado Symphony performs at the Boettecher Concert Hall, located within the Denver Performing Arts Centre, one of the largest of its kind in the US, and is a great trip for those looking for a refined night of world-class classical music. Just adjacent are numerous theatres of different sizes and types where you can see plays, musicals, operas and ballets from local and international companies.
Comprising majestic mountains, diverse plant and animal life and climates ranging from dense forest to open tundras, the Rocky Mountain Park, which celebrated its centenary in 2015, is only 2 hour’s drive from downtown Denver and serves nature enthusiasts well. With your car rented through easyCar, treat yourself to a scenic drive; as you cruise down Highway 36, there are incomparable views of the Roosevelt National Forest, passing the picturesque cities of Boulder and Lyons on the way. Activities include Bear Lake Loop, a flat trail that circles Bear Lake, horseback riding, fishing, and deer-watching.
45 miles to the West, Georgetown was the third biggest town in Colorado once upon a time. Despite now being home to little more than a thousand people, there is a host of things to do. Drift through the Old West streets or enjoy unspoiled views of the mountains and old mining canyons by riding the Georgetown Loop Railroad, which journeys at a height of 640 feet to ex-mining town Silver Plume. Alternatively, you could try ice fishing (permits needed for over 16s) or ride a quad bike on the mountain trails for a more high-octane adventure. Museums include the Hotel de Paris Museum, which in its zenith was a lavish French style hotel.
