New and old walk hand in hand in the capital of Wales. This city honours the past and embraces the present like no other.

At the forefront of Cardiff Bay, the Victorian terracotta bricks of the Pierhead building take centre stage. Known as 'Baby Big Ben' because of its clocktower, its grand presence stretches out around the waterfront. Cardiff's inscripted Millennium Centre, coated with a copper facade and engraved with expressive, bilingual calligraphy, sits just behind. Further round the bay is the Norwegian Church; here Scandinavian heritage and Roald Dahl narrative is cloaked by a gable-roofed, white, religious sanctuary.

Further inland, Cardiff Castle's elaborate exterior is the absolute epitome of gothic design. Behind its doors is an unexpectedly ornate selection of rooms. Intricate, elaborate carvings float like three-dimensional tapestries on the walls. Complex, colourful murals occupy the ceilings; dazzling chandeliers and colossal fireplaces advertise their elegance. This fancy chateau outshines some of the greatest. Once again, its setting is respected, yet sophisticatedly fused with modern life. In the distance, almost floating on the River Taff, is the sail-like roof of the Principality Stadium.

Bute Park is truly a sight to behold. In Autumn, the amber, cinnamon and apricot leaves cling to the trees and litter the floor, creating a regal pathway for visitors to ruffle. The satisfying crunch of this seasonal red-carpet resonates, and snippets of landmarks in the distance tease onlookers with their beauty.

Tips for hiring a car in Cardiff

Tip 1
If you plan on visiting Newport from Cardiff, the fastest route by far is via the M4. To reach it, head north on the A4042 until you reach the roundabout taking you onto the motorway.
Tip 2
Overnight parking in Cardiff city centre is expensive. If you can, park your car just outside of the city for a lower price.
Tip 3
Avoiding rush hour will mean you get more time enjoying Cardiff and less time in traffic. If going up for the day, leave before 8 am when the roads are clear.
Tip 4
Cardiff airport is quite a distance from the city, so if you're arriving by plane it makes sense to pick up your car from the airport rental desk.
