Bergamo, nestled in the sumptuous Lombardia region, is actually split into two sections. Bergamo Bassa is the lower, more modern area of the city, while Bergamo Alta is the older, more attractive district set high up in the foothills of the Alps. A scenic funicular railway connects the two areas. Up amongst the picturesque setting of Bergamo Alta, Renaissance and medieval architecture and the remains of 15th century fortified walls make it one of the most attractive hill towns in Italy. The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is a wonderful church to explore and has been around for over 600 years. On the third Sunday of each month the city hosts a superb antiques fair – the Mercantico. If you’re lucky enough to visit during late January or early February, Bergamo hosts an international jazz festival, made all the more enjoyable by the stunning backdrop!
