Driving advice for Tunisia
Zero-tolerance
Being a Muslim country, there is zero-tolerance on drink driving in Tunisia. Drivers are not permitted to have any alcohol in their system. Penalties are harsh and include prison sentences.
Documents
Drivers must always carry a valid licence as well as car hire documents.
Desert driving
Desert driving requires additional precautions. Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. Also be sure to take additional fuel and water.
Night time driving
Driving at night outside of cities is dangerous. Animals wander the roads and many local vehicles don’t use headlights. Therefore, it’s best to avoid night-time driving where possible.
The Capital
Tunis is both laid-back and passionate. A surprising North-African city, it offers a distinct landscape and feel. Remarkably friendly and cosmopolitan, you're bound to feel welcome here.
In Tunis you’ll find a marriage of styles. The French colonial style of the 19th century brings order and structure to this bustling city while the classic medina is a chaotic network of palaces and alleyways. You could believe you are wandering both the streets of Paris and a souk in Marrakech.
Soak up the rays as you sample the tempting patisseries in street-side cafés. Then, say farewell to the European feel as you explore the maze through the Port de France. You won’t be able to avoid the beach feel despite the contrasting ruins and modern villas that adorn the roadside.
