What’s it like to drive in Southwest France?
You won’t have to deal with painful traffic jams as you would in France’s big cities, but avoiding toll roads is nearly impossible.
Border crossings
Being so close to the border of Spain (it's only an hour’s drive to San Sebastian!) it’s worth considering a day trip to France’s southern neighbour. But if you plan on making this trip, you must inform the rental company to ensure your insurance remains valid. Some companies may also charge an extra fee for crossing the border.

West coast road trip
Biarritz to Bordeaux
Driving along the southwestern coast of France is the true escape for anyone looking for the best surf breaks and laid back beach vibes. From Biarritz, breathe in the salty sea air while slowly making your way north through a string of small Atlantic set towns towards Bordeaux.
Bayonne, one of the prettiest medieval towns in the region, should be your first stop after leaving Biarritz. Further north, you’ll find Mimizan Plage with great beaches for both the nouveau surfer and long standing expert. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Arcachon, where you can taste the freshest oysters around. Its golden beaches are also an ideal spot for a dip or taking an afternoon rest. Before leaving the coast and heading inland to Bordeaux, you must stop at the Dune of Pilat or Dune du Pyla, Europe’s highest sand dune, for some epic ocean views.
