Hire a car in Austria

Austria is a country rooted in imperial elegance and natural riches.

Formerly one of Europe's greatest empires, Austria’s Baroque masterpieces – both musical and architectural – are rivalled by its equally admirable contemporary culture. Contrary to its visual opulence, the country’s relaxed friendliness encourages an atmosphere where you can slow down and relish the scenery.

This landlocked country is littered with tourist jewels and scenic drives, so no matter which direction you head, your Austrian road trip will be a glorious success.

Driving tips

Einbahn
A sign with a single arrow on it which reads einbahn, indicates a one-way street. Avoid getting this mixed up with street name signs, which are usually posted on the sides of buildings.

Trams
If you’re driving in Vienna, you’ll find yourself sharing major roads with the city’s trams. Make sure you are never blocking a tram and if you are approaching a tram stop, you must stop your vehicle and allow pedestrians to leave and board the tram.

Traffic Lights
Prepare to stop if you come across a flashing green light, which means the green light is coming to an end. If you reach an amber light combined with a red light, this indicates the lights will soon turn green.

Tolls
A vignette (toll sticker) is required to drive on all motorways in Austria. You can buy a vignette at petrol stations and rest stops.

What to eat: Try a slice of apfelstrudel, Austria’s most famous dessert. Sweet apples and crispy pastry, what’s not to like?

What to drink: Experiencing an afternoon at one of Vienna’s old cafes is a must. Traditional coffee houses are ingrained into the city’s culture and a Wiener Melange is the best hot cup of coffee to sip on.

What to listen to: The city has a legendary musical heritage, which has marked it as one of the world’s finest performance centres. Enjoy a ballet, opera or orchestra concert at the Vienna State Opera for a full city experience.
