Brussels driving tips

Priority to the right
In Belgium, if a car is joining your road from a road on the right, then you must slow down or stop if necessary to let them onto the road. This is the most likely rule to catch you out, since it is so unusual.

Road signs and local language
Depending on where you are in Belgium, road signs will either be in French or Flemish (Dutch). This means that the name of your destination may completely change further along your route.

Broadly speaking, the north is Dutch-speaking Flemish community known as the Flanders region and the south is French-speaking Wallonia region. Brussels is situated in the middle and is bilingual, so if you drive out of the city you will more than likely experience a little bit of both regions.

Things to be aware of
Big fines are in place for speeding (these can run into the thousands) so it’s really not worth it.

You must stop if a tram stops as they have priority over cars.
