Derby is a generous gateway to the Derbyshire countryside and stunning Peak District.

One of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution, Derby’s importance in the country rose as it became a manufacturing centre. It was the site of the first water-powered silk mill in Britain, as well as for car manufacturers Rolls-Royce and Toyota. The city’s cultural developments are on the rise too, with a frenzy of festivals and museums like the Pickford House.

Winnats Pass

Cutting through what was once thought to be a ravine, this mountain pass road in the High Peak area of the Peak District, is an intrepid drive.

The 5.8-mile winding route is a steep climb through the Hope Valley. Limestone pinnacles loom over the road creating a natural amphitheater. Its sharp gradient and narrow turns means it is off limits to buses, coaches and heavy vehicles, but a wonder to drive for smaller cars and motorbikes.

Located between the villages of Hope and Sparrowpit, the road passes by tourist caves, caverns and the famous “Bottomless Pit”.

Start the journey by making your way to Sparrowpit or to Hope, both take approximately one hour and 20 minutes to reach by car.
