Out and about
The Hellfire Caves
Borne of an unusual scheme by Sir Francis Dashwood, these chalk caves were once used by the infamous Hellfire Club. The club, made up of high-ranking and influential members of society, was rumoured to have engaged with black magic and held religious meetings and rituals within the caves.
The network of caverns, however, were originally part of a plan to supply employment for locals. The former chalk quarry was further excavated by hand in the 1740s – you can still see individual pick marks on the walls. The chalk was used to build the main road from West Wycombe to High Wycombe.
The caves are located 5km from the city centre. There is a car park located on site as well as at West Wycombe Garden Centre, a short walk from the caves.
