Tintagel castle
This spectacular medieval fortification, built half on the mainland and half on a jagged rocky outcrop reaching out to the Cornish sea, is steeped in mystery.
Said to be the birthplace of King Arthur, Tintagel has fixated writers and historians for centuries. Even today, hidden beneath the castle you will find Merlin’s Cave. The 100 metre long sea cave passes through Tintagel Island and is where Merlin carried infant Arthur to safety.
The castle’s history, however, stretches back to the Roman times. Many fragments of pottery from the Dark Ages have also been discovered here.
48 kilometers northeast of Newquay, it should take approximately one hour by car to reach the castle.
Park your car in Tintagel village, at the designated castle car park, located 600 metres away from the heritage site. There is no parking directly beside the castle.
