Avebury Henge
Though lesser known in comparison to Stonehenge, it is part of the same UNESCO world heritage site as the famous circle.
Avebury, a Neolithic and Bronze age ceremonial site, is thought to be 4600 years old and is the largest stone circle in Britain – originally about 100 stones. It is estimated that it took 1.5 million man-hours to complete.
The site was excavated and restored in the 1930s by archaeologist Alexander Keiller – there is also a museum on site bearing his name. This sacred landscape is often grazed by sheep and encircles and area that includes Avebury village.
If you're interested in visiting Avebury, it's roughly a 25 minute drive from Swindon along the A4361, which takes you on a scenic journey through the North Wessex Downs.
There is car park 500 yards away from the stone circle. It is £7 all day or £4 after 3pm. The archeological site itself is open from dawn till dusk.
