Best time of year to visit
If you’re hoping to see the Northern Lights, go between September and March. If you’d prefer warm and pleasant weather, visit between June and August.

On traffic and street signs in Finland, the names of destinations will often be printed in both Finnish and Swedish.

Pack appropriately
Temperatures drop so far below zero in the winters it’s not even worth looking at the thermometer, just bundle up. It’s also a good idea to keep a blanket in your rental car in case of a break down or simply to use while the car is warming up.

Money saving
It’s no secret that visiting Finland is expensive, but that doesn’t mean there aren't ways to save money.

Go grocery shopping for a quick meal rather than eating out all the time. However, lunchtime buffets can be a good budget option if you want to try the local food and eat enough to fill you until the next day.

Limit your alcohol intake or avoid booze altogether, as a couple of drinks can cost the price of a full meal elsewhere in Europe.

Travelling with company is one of the best ways to save money. Splitting the cost of your car hire and accomodation can be cheaper than public buses or a dorm room.

Depending on the time of time of year you visit, you’ll encounter very different driving conditions. Summers are constantly bright, with skies lit up by the midnight sun. Winters, on the other hand, are snowy and shadowed by constant darkness, making visibility difficult.

It is important to note that the general speed limit for highways and motorways is reduced to 80 km/h during the winter.

It is a legal requirement to always have your headlights on, both during the day, and at night – even when the midnight sun is shining.

Do as the Fins do. After filling up your tank, move your car off to the side (away from the pump) and then go in a pay.
