Things to discover
Musical moments
Lyrical tree
Tiergarten Park is home to the Stand by Me Tree. Ben E King’s lyrics are perfectly etched into the bark of a lowly tree.
Open-air X-Factor
Take centre stage at Mauerpark and sing your heart out. On Sundays, crowds come to the bear pit and the bravest make sweet (or not so sweet) music.
Industrial techno
Kraftwerk is a club venue which used to be a power plant. Need we say more?
Symphonic sensation
The city is home to the Berliner Philharmonie. Head to this special venue and see if you can catch one of the best orchestras in the world.
Jazz on tap
Acoustic clubs, such as the b-flat Jazz Club, are a great place to unwind and click your fingers to the beat.
Travel secrets
Beach haven
Head to Berlin in winter and mess with your mind by visiting Tropical Islands. Built inside an old airship hangar is 3,000 square metres of makeshift sea, along with the world’s largest indoor rainforest. This immense, frankly bizarre wonderland could easily make you forget that you are in Germany.
Aquatic wonder
AquaDom, the largest cylindrical fish tank in the world, lives in Berlin. With a lift operating through the middle, this is one exciting and unusual way to experience life underwater.
Dinner with a view
Go for breakfast on top of the Reichstag – the only government building in the world where this is possible. Not only this, but you’ll also witness breathtaking views across the city.

Driving tips
- The city centre is an Environmental Zone. Check your hire car has the relevant sticker at the rental desk if you need to drive within the zone.
- There is some speculation around speed limits in Germany, but road signs will inform you of the rules. In built up areas, the limit is 60 km/h; outside is 100 km/hr. Most autobahns have a limit of 130 km/h. It is only in some rural areas that no set speed restrictions apply, although the rules are very clear. You must be in control of the car and adapt your speed according to the road, traffic, visibility, weather and car.
- As a European city, Berlin car rental suppliers offer manual vehicles at a much cheaper price.
- Fuel in Germany can be expensive, so check out the latest rates and factor this into your budget.
Useful road sign translations
- Baustelle – roadworks
- Einbahnstraße – one-way street
- Parkhaus – parking
- Tankstelle – petrol station
- Umleitung – diversion
Fairytale exploring
Pfaueninsel Palace
Drive alongside the River Havel, and you’ll stumble upon Pfaueninsel Palace – a mysterious, white castle which wouldn’t be out of place inside a pop-up picture book.
This chateau sits on Peacock Island (yes, these proud, colourful birds live here too), and visiting this area is the perfect way to escape the city for a while.
