Ancient castles, a historical capital, sandy beaches and mysterious forests – Latvia has it all in abundance.

Latvia is both larger than most people imagine and easier to drive around. In fact, given its diversity, the country is best discovered by road. Exploring by car you can wind your way from lakes to the seaside and from cities to forests. Latvia’s landscape is overpowering, whether you’re stumbling through an ancient forest or taking a nap on a white sand beach.

Nonetheless, the urban capital of Riga is worthy of a visit by itself. Layered in culture and history, it is the entryway to this Baltic country.

Driving advice for Latvia

Parking in urban areas
In towns and cities, drivers must be careful not to park on, or obstruct, tram lines.

Alcohol
The permitted limit for alcohol in the blood is 0.05% and less for inexperienced drivers. Police may require an immediate on-the-spot drug or alcohol test. You cannot refuse being breathalysed without stringent penalties.

Jurmala
There are no tolls on the roads in Latvia. However, you will be required to pay in order to enter the city of Jurmala between April and September.

Headlights
Headlights must be on, both day and night, whilst driving in Latvia.

The Capital

On arrival in Riga you will first be struck by the domineering Gothic spires. But look beyond the façade and you quickly find Art Nouveau flamboyantly splashed across the city.

Riga is a large capital by Baltic standards. It is both cosmopolitan and vibrant, yet, it is also muted and reserved, at least until you dig underneath the city's surface. Explore and quickly you will find a lively hip approach to life here. Plus, you’re just a short drive from the beach city of Jurmala, where you can drive past undisturbed sand dunes and go blueberry picking.

The old town in Riga offers the visitor an impressive amount of historic architecture. Sitting alongside cobbled lanes are majestic churches and relaxed squares. Here you should kick back and find a beer garden or street café to relax and unwind.
