Hire a car in Marseille

France’s oldest and second largest city, Marseille defines its own type of French Riviera character.

Despite its location on the Mediterranean, Marseille is by no means a seaside resort. Unlike most of the country’s coastal towns, it's not instantly charming, and still holds its historic gritty and industrial feel.

However, the city’s established mix of African and French culture and long history, which spans back to ancient Greece, gives it a diverse ambience. Named the European Capital of Culture in 2013, Marseille is rediscovering its glamour.

A day trip

As you wander around Arles discovering the city’s cobbled alleyways, colourful window shutters and doors, you’ll feel as though you’ve walked into a painting. Which is, perhaps, why Vincent Van Gogh spent 444 days in this southern village. Van Gogh’s time in Arles was one of his most productive periods. Tour the city to view some of the places appearing in his iconic paintings, such as the Yellow House.

Just an hour's drive from Marseille, Arles was also a provincial capital of ancient Rome. The city’s grand Roman amphitheatre is still used today for concerts and bullfights.
