Museums
Modern Art Museum
This gallery presents the history of the island and the entire nation of Greece through the visions of eminent 20th century Greek artists. It also includes the works of foreign painters who permanently reside on the island.
Archaeological Museum
Situated within the walls of the Old Town of Rhodes, the building of the museum itself is a historic site. Artefacts are housed in the medieval building of the Hospital of the Knights.
Monastries
Filerimos Monastery
Located on a hill overlooking Alyssa, this monastery was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Built in the 15th century, its Gothic style stone construction was very different than typical greek monasteries of the time.
Panagia Tsambika
Considered a protector of the island, this Byzantine church is also devoted to the Holy Mary. It’s believed that the icon kept here works miracles, particularly for women trying to conceive.

Ancient history
Mainly due to its strategic position between Turkey and North Africa, Rhodes has been an illustrious place since antiquity. Its archaeological sites reflect its origins under the rule of the Crusaders, Ottoman Empire and Italian invaders. Besides the capital’s Old Town – a medieval treasure and UNESCO World Heritage Site – there are numerous other historic ruins to see.
Lindos Acropolis – reveals the wealth of this ancient town, which was founded in the 10th century B.C., and has spectacular views of the coast. Its temple dedicated to Athena Lindia is a particularly impressive monument.
Palace of the Grand Masters – a shining highlight in the Old Town of Rhodes, this enormous palace was built in the 14th century by the Knights of Saint John.
Acropolis of Rhodes – on the western edge of the city, the ruins are one of the finest examples of Hellenic style of architecture, with temples, public building and cult palaces.
