Exploring Naples

Local highlights

Posillipo Hill
Undoubtedly one of the best places to see the city of Naples from above, this viewpoint promises purple sunsets, and city lights.

Borgo Marinaro
The small port of Borgo Marinaro is hidden away from the rest of the city. Dine al fresco in wicker chairs, and enjoy the view of bobbing wooden boats. Out on the water is Castel dell’Ovo, the site of a few Greek myths as well as the location of the poet Virgil’s egg.

Gaiola Underwater Park
Also on the water’s edge (and underneath it) is Gaiola Underwater Park. Here, you can uncover a unique selection of submerged Roman archaeology, now home to an array of fish and plant life. Some of the remains are above ground, but the best way to explore this attraction is by taking a snorkelling tour.

Local driving tips

Scenic driving
Lots of people who rent a car in Naples plan on driving down to the Amalfi Coast. Many of the roads here are thrilling, but windy. The scenery is beautiful too, however the best advice for designated drivers is to stay focused. Because of the bends and the narrow roads, You’ll need to concentrate on the tarmac and not the panoramas! People say it is worth it, but if you can share the driving then everyone gets a chance to really take in the views.

Don’t be put off if locals want to overtake you. Italian drivers like to go fast – especially when they know the roads well – so just give them space and decelerate slightly if someone is trying to pass.

Leave all your valuables in a safe wherever you are staying. It is not worth keeping anything in your hire car and tempting a break in. If you can hide obvious evidence of being a tourist too (such as maps and suitcases) then this will help minimise the risk.

Blue spaces indicate that the parking must be paid for. White spaces are usually free, but read the signs carefully as there may well be restrictions in place. Parking in Italian cities can be tricky, so make sure your hotel has parking.

Road signs

Much of central Naples is a ZTL zone. Rental cars are unlikely to be permitted within these areas, so make sure you avoid them. If you see a blank red circle, sometimes with the words zona traffico limitato above it, this means you are entering a restricted zone.

Watch out for signs which mention the Tutor System. This is one of Italy’s ways to crack down on speeding and it means there are average speed cameras measuring your speed from one camera to the next.

You may see signs for these if you are driving on an autostrade. A chain of rest stops offering food and drink, many are open 24 hours. More than half the service stations in Italy are Autogrills, and you will find loads of food choices inside them.

Yellow diamond with white edges mean you are on a priority road and technically have right of way (proceed with caution though!). If this sign has black lines through it, then you do not have right of way and must let traffic pull out.

Give way
Upside down triangles with red edges mean give way.

A strange black and white bullseye looking sign simply means that you are entering a city.

Hike in the mountains

To get away from the bustling town of Naples, head to Lattari Mountains Regional Park. Drive the winding SS366 into the mountains to see a slice of non-coastal nature. You can do guided hikes if you’re feeling really intrepid, or simply wind through the impressive natural scenery in your car.
