Hire a car in Catania
Sicily’s second city, Catania is a place of chaos and beauty, overlooked by a continuously rumbling volcano.
Mount Etna – Europe’s most active volcano – has influenced and defined Catania throughout its history. It has destroyed the city on several occasions, leaving behind few Baroque buildings and forcing a quick re-build of the city’s visual landscape. Catania is home to the sweetest pistachios in the world and, of course, its own signature pasta sauce. Whether it's the food or the anticipation of volcanic eruption, the city’s youthful energy is contagious.
Coastal day trip
Taormina
Taormina is, as Ernest Hemingway put it, “so pretty it hurts to look” at it. Under an hour’s drive from Catania, this coastal town and long-established tourist resort is probably the most visited place in Sicily.
Set upon a rocky outcrop, it’s easy to get lost within the town’s elaborate network of medieval streets, but that's all part of the fun. Taormina has a rich Mediterranean, yet touristy atmosphere. Its main attraction is a dramatic ancient Roman-Greek theatre. Taormina is also the ideal gateway for an excursion over the lava fields and craters of Mount Etna.

Driving tips
North versus south roads
Highways in the north (around Palermo and where vehicles cross over from the Italian peninsula) are smooth and a pleasure to drive. If you make your way past Catania and towards Syracuse, however, wide roads become narrow and difficult to navigate.
Petrol station espresso
Not your usual driving tip, but this isn’t your usual disappointing petrol station coffee. Espresso runs through the veins of Sicilian culture, so don’t expect anything less than the best from roadside delis. Fill up the tank and sip a silky cup of jo.
Signage
Have a plan laid out before jumping in your car. Road signs in Sicily are not always clear and may only mention larger towns beyond your intended destination or just state the road number.
